چکیده

We propose an analytic model to compute the station’s saturated throughput and packet delay performance of the IEEE 802.11 DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) in which frame transmission error rates in the channel are different from each other. Our analytic model shows that a station experiencing worse frame error rates than the others suffers severe performance degradation below its deserved throughput and delay performance. 802.11 DCF adopts an exponential back-off scheme. When some stations suffer from high frame error rates, their back-off stages should be increased so that others get the benefit from the smaller collision probabilities. This impact is then recursively applied to degrade the performance of the victim stations. In particular, we show that the performance is considerably degraded even if the frame error rate of the victim station satisfies the receiver input level sensitivity that has been specified in the IEEE 802.11 standard. We also verify the analytic results by the OPNET simulations. Keywords—IEEE 802.11 DCF, Wireless LAN, Throughput and Delay Performance

Effects ofTransmission Error Rates on Saturation Performance of the IEEE 802.11 MAC

Analyzing the effect of transmission errors on the performance of IEEE 802.11 is important since the wireless channels are error-prone. Most of the existing work on the performance analysis of IEEE 802.11 distributed coordination function (DCF) assumes ideal channel conditions. Although a few recent papers consider the impact of packet error rate, they assume the same packet error rate for all ...

Linear Approximation Model Throughput Performance Analysis of IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordinated Function in Wireless Lossy Channel

One source of performance degradation in wireless networks is the frame error that occurs because of nonideal channel conditions. Most previous works assume an ideal transmission channel (i.e., no error in transmission), whereas other works assume that the error is constant and exists only in data packets. These previous works do not consider transmission errors in control frames (i.e., RTS, CT...

Performance Enhancement of IEEE 802.11b WLANs Using Cooperative MAC Protocol

IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) guarantees fair transmission opportunity to stations. Channel occupation of low rate stations in IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) causes the performance anomaly resulting in the degradation of overall network throughput. Using cooperative communications between a high rate station and a low rate station, performance anomaly can b...

Analytical Analysis of Applying Packet Fragmentation Mechanism on Both Basic and RTS/CTS Access Methods of the IEEE 802.11b DCF Network Under Imperfect Channel and Finite Load Conditions

The mathematical modeling and performance evaluation of the IEEE 802.11 network in all its various extensions (802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11e, 802.11n, etc.) have already been widely explored over the past years. However, the Packet Fragmentation Mechanism (PFM), which is proposed by the IEEE work group to enhance the MAC sub-layer of the IEEE 802.11 standard in an error-prone channel, has ...

Performance Analysis of IEEE 802.11 Modified Distributed Coordination Function for Wireless LANs Based on Data rate

IEEE has standardized 802.11 protocol for Wireless Local Area Networks. The 802.11 MAC standard specifies two access mechanisms, the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) and Point Coordination Function (PCF). DCF is considered as the basic MAC mechanism, based on the carrier sensing multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA-CA) protocol, which is introduced to avoid the collision. The mai...
